Congrats to Eliza and John!!!

Omigosh. HUUUUUUUUGE congrats from the rest of the Mentees to Eliza Wheeler on winning first place and  John Deininger for winning an Honor Award in in the SCBWI Portfolio Showcase.

Eliza and John, we are SO PROUD OF YOU.

I admit to getting embarrassingly weepy when the announcements were made. The six of us have really bonded this past year, and it was like seeing family up there.

Congrats to all the winners and new Mentees!

At the SCBWI Summer Conference

Quickie post: Eliza, Kimberly, John and I are at the SCBWI Summer Conference right now, and we're all having a fabulous time though we're really missing Ashley and Andrea. Such inspiring keynotes and breakout sessions! Our main challenge: there are so many great events going on at the same time that it's so hard to choose.

Here's a photo from last night's Illustrator Social (which was on at the same time as the International SCBWI Social). From left to right: me, John Deininger, Laurent Linn (Art Director at Simon & Schuster), Cecilia Yung (Art Director at Penguin), Kimberly Gee & Eliza Wheeler.

New Cello Illustration

by Eliza

One of the main pieces of feedback that I got from our Mentors was that I need to separate my portfolio into two styles: #1. my darker, more literary work  #2. my lighter, more commercial style

I've created new work for my lighter style, but hadn't added anything to the dark stuff - so I came up with this new image, and finished it yesterday.

See my blog post for more info on the process.

If anyone has new work that they've created for the portfolio showcase this year, please feel free to share!
