My letter to the British Potato Council and their response

While talking about potatoes on Facebook with my friends Mary Ellen Wessels (of Hopeful Romantics) and Tim Walker (Wilderwood), I was excited to discover that there was a British Potato Council. I packaged up a signed copy of I'M BORED and sent them the following letter:

-----------

Dear Potato Council,

As a fan of potatoes, I recently enjoyed browsing your website. Although I live across the pond, it was heartening to see that potatoes are appreciated just as much in the UK as they are in Canada.

I’m the illustrator of I’M BORED, a picture book written by Michael Ian Black, about a talking Potato and a bored little girl. It was published by Simon & Schuster Books For Young Readers and was a Junior Library Guild selection as well as a New York Times Notable Children’s Book.

I enclose a copy for your enjoyment. I do not ask for anything in return but merely wish to celebrate our shared appreciation of potatoes, no matter what the nationality.

Sincerely yours,

Debbie Ridpath Ohi
Children’s book writer and illustrator

----------

I just received a response back from Rob Clayton, Director of the Potato Council in the UK (!!!):

For those with text-only access:

--------

"Debbie, hi!

Just a short but heart-felt note to say thanks for the book that arrived yesterday. The potato council team can be a stern lot at times so it was great to see the thirty-somethings chuckling their way around the office. Nice to know there are potato-lovers around the world.

all the best,
Rob

p.s. is there a flamingo council?"

-----

Love this so much. :-) THANK YOU, POTATO COUNCIL!!!!

To all: You can find out more about the British Potato Council on their website at www.potato.org.uk.

I'M BORED in Belgium!

Recently added to the I'M BORED In The Wild reader gallery: this photo of my friend Cédrick Caumont in FNAC, Gallerie Toison D'Or in Brussels (Belgium) with the French version, JE M'ENNUIE. Cédrick is a board game publisher at Repos Production, a company that publishes my favorite board game: 7 WONDERS (you can also find out more about 7 Wonders on BoardGameGeek). Repos also publishes other great games, including a poetry writing game and other games for adults as well as younger kids.

Anyway, I am SO EXCITED about the fact that I'M BORED (or rather, JE M'ENNUIE) is sitting in at least one bookshop in Brussels right now. :-)

My copy of JE M'ENNUIE just arrived!!

Love this! Also, saying "Je M'Ennuie" is SOOOOOO much more satisfying than "I'm Bored."

:-D

I'M BORED on a dogsled near Mt-Tremblant, Québec

I'M BORED on a dog sledding adventure near Mont-Tremblant, Québec in Canada

I went dogsledding in Québec over the March Break, thanks to my mom-in-law and Expedition Wolf. SO MUCH FUN, especially during the downhill bits.

Our guide, Olivier:

In the photo above, Olivier is watching the road to let us know when we could all cross without fear of being hit by a truck. Photo taken after sledding, when we were heading back to the Expedition Wolf cabin.

To his credit, Olivier didn't think I was weird for wanting to take a picture of I'M BORED during the trip. He even volunteered to take the photo above.

In fact, he was curious about the process and about the book. I really wished I could remember more French, but I did tell him about the French version being available now: Je M'Ennuie.

Fun adventure, and it was kind of cool to connect with someone over children's books.

Simon & Schuster Children's Trade Marketing as I'M BORED characters

Simon & Schuster Children's trade marketing group as I'm Bored characters, "looking bored as called for." From L to R: Nick Elliot (potato), Bernie Cruz (the flamingo), Chrissy Noh (the girl), and Annie Giovaniello Zafian (potato). Chrissy & Bernie designed & sewed the costumes with help from Nick. I LOVE THESE COSTUMES. Thanks to Anne for the photo!

Hazel Mitchell's Farmer Sketch with I'M BORED

Thanks to my Pixel Shavings pal Hazel Mitchell for giving me permission to post this illustration. I first saw this on Hazel's FB page, where she wrote: "Having a hard time getting back into a project I haven't touched since February, even though I really want to work on it while I have a couple of days. So decided to digital doodle. Like this farmer it's hard work digging those precious potatoes. I blame Debbie Ohi ..."
