Q, Who are your illustration heroes?
Too many to list, but here are some of the illustrators whose work have influenced me:
Charles Schulz (Peanuts) and Bill Watterson (Calvin & Hobbes):
I love how both could convey so much emotion in their characters with very few lines as well as their ability to distill such wonderful stories and character development into a few panels. Reading comics like Peanuts and Calvin & Hobbes motivated me to start my own webcomics, and that in turn helped me learn so much about pacing and connecting with my readers. Feedback from the latter after each strip often influenced future strips.
Quentin Blake (illustrated Roald Dahl books and many other children's books) and Ronald Searle:
I was drawn to their loose, sketchy linework and imaginative characters.
Sylvester and the Magic Pebble is one of my favourite children's books ever. As a child, I remember being deeply affected by the part of the story where Sylvester is stuck in rock form while his parents desperately search for him. The book had a happy ending, of course, but I found myself going back to that one scene. Steig's loose linework also appealed to me.
