I'M SAD Book Tour 2018 (DAY 6 & 7: Rhode Island, Connecticut and Brooklyn, NY): Bank St. Books/Savoy, RJ Julia and PowerHouse Arena
(Last updated: June 25, 2018)
In my previous post (New Jersey), I talked about how Books, Bytes & Beyond helped arrange school visits for Michael Ian Black and me: Traphagen Elementary, Memorial School and T. Baldwin Demarest, then doing a grown-up Story Hour at WORD Bookstore.
Over the next two days, Michael and I visited Savoy Bookshop & Café in Rhode Island, RJ Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT and PowerHouse Arena in Brooklyn, NY.
Our first event of the day was a Story Hour at Savoy Bookshop and Café. A portion of the book sales were donated to Opening Doors For Westerly's Children, an organization which promotes early childhood literacy and academic achievement for local children.
Did you know that Savoy has FAIRIES? I spotted one of their doors here:
Here's a close-up:
I want to go back someday and find the rest of the fairy doors; I've been told there are more!
My friend from University of Toronto days, William Rucklidge, made a surprise appearance. SO great to see him again:

And YAY, I finally got to meet Debbi Michiko Florence in person! We had been online friends for years but had never met face-to-face. I was coveting her flamingo bag and t-shirt; we both love flamingos. Do check out Debbi's newest book, JASMINE TOGUCHI: FLAMINGO KEEPER!
Thanks to all who came out to our Savoy Storytime! Michael and I had a wonderful time:
I collaborated with young readers on some art and stories about our art:
Thanks @inkyelbows & @michaelianblack for coming to Savoy this morning! Soil makes me happy too- the potato and I are kindred souls. pic.twitter.com/9hTigsazej

Will the alien unicorn-velociraptor save its planet from the threatening comet? Only @inkyelbows knows for sure! pic.twitter.com/xQfxf4KkSB

Thanks to Savoy and Westerly's Children for the warm welcome and for letting us visit!
We had lunch at a restaurant near R.J. Julia's, which was our next visit. I love this photo of me and Michael that Audrey Gibbons took at Moxie restaurant:
After lunch, we headed over to R. J. Julia:
Look, they had picture books by me and Michael on display! Plus WHERE ARE MY BOOKS? (yay!!)
Some pics from our RJ Julia visit, including one of Michael DRAWING:

The next day, we did a children's storytime at Powerhouse Arena:
Today’s the day! Please join us at 2PM in welcoming @michaelianblack and @inkyelbows at the Arena for the book launch of their wonderful new children’s book, “I’m Sad” published by @simonschuster ! Trust us, your children will love you for bringing them! pic.twitter.com/TpC3Bgd5Kj

Love the "Not A Fan Of Mean" teddybear sitting one of the event chairs:
I arrived early and had time to check out the flea market across from Powerhouse (thanks to Powerhouse staff for the recommendation!):
I bought some Jianbing (Shanghai-inspired street food) and some tiny keys. I could not resist the latter even though I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to use them for. Found object doodles, maybe?
It started raining a bit, but I didn't care. I had Jianbing and TINY KEYS, after all!
Loved browsing Powerhouse Arena's shop and bought some cards as well as a "When In Doubt, Go To The Library" tote bag. Plus LOOK, I spotted How To Code A Sandcastle, a new picture book written by my friend Josh Funk and illustrated by Sara Palacios:
Thanks to the young readers who came out to our Storytime at Powerhouse Arena!

Great to see Barry Goldblatt again (Michael's agent):
And big thanks to Keston, Mark and Kat for making Michael and me feel so welcome! You have such an amazing space, and we appreciate you letting us visit.
